SALONE DEL MOBILE

Over the course of three magical weeks spanning April and May, I was able to travel to Europe to take part in both the 'Milan design week' and the 'Blum' Austria tour.

 

Firstly the 'Salone del Mobile', an action-packed week based in Milan, where the design world gathers like nowhere else. 

 

Anchored by the main event space out in Rho, approx. 100,000 m2 of exhibition space comes alive with the leading design houses showcasing all that's new. 

 

Then Milan itself, with the 'Fuori Salone' events, opens palaces, museums, galleries, public spaces and more to the public with a dizzying array of events: 

 

Special highlights include spending a day visiting showrooms with Mobilia. Graciously hosted by Jacobo, we went through Cassini, Kettal, Poltrona Frau and CC Tapis, finished off with a much need respite at of course the Patricia Urquola designed Casa Brera. 

 

Equally memorable was spending an afternoon as a quest of Philippo of Salbini at the Gaggenau launch. Based at Villa Necchi, Gaggenau presented their new range of appliances in a stunning event space created just for them. Then Philipo graciously organised for a tour of the villa, and we spent the remainder of the day in awe of the beauty of the house.  

 

Milan design week held many other events, too many to mention all of them, but of particular note was the Aesop exhibition and a visit to the Henge showroom. 

 

Of course, days in Milan can only be started properly with a visit to Marchese for a coffee, filled out with a drop into the Alfa Romeo museum, and completed with a drink at Bar Basso when all else was closed for the day.
